In order to clarify the cesium iodide (CsI) transport behavior with a focus on the mechanisms of gaseous iodine formation in the reactor coolant system of LWR under a severe accident condition, a reproductive experiment of CsI transport behavior was conducted using a facility equipped with a thermal gradient tube. Various analyses on deposits and airborne materials during transportation could elucidate two mechanisms for the gaseous iodine formation. One was the gaseous phase chemical reaction in Cs-I-O-H system at relatively high-temperature region, which led to gaseous iodine transport to the lower temperature region without any further changes in gas species due to the kinetics limitation effects. The other one was the chemical reactions related to condensed phase of CsI, namely those of CsI deposits on walls with surface of stainless steel to form Cs$$_{2}$$CrO$$_{4}$$ compound and CsI aerosol particles with steam, which were newly found in this study.

Effect of B$$_{4}$$C absorber material on melt progression and chemical forms of iodine or cesium under severe accident conditions

B$$_{4}$$C used mainly for BWR and EPR absorbers could cause phenomena which never happen in PWR with Ag-In-Cd absorbers during severe accident. B$$_{4}$$C would make a eutectic interaction with stainless steel and enhance melt relocation. Boron oxidation could increase H$$_{2}$$ generation and change of liberated carbon to CH$$_{4}$$ could enhance CH$$_{3}$$I generation. HBO$$_{2}$$ generated during B$$_{4}$$C oxidation could be changed to CsBO$$_{2}$$ by combining with Cs. This may increase Cs deposition in reactor coolant system. There could be differences in configuration, surface area, stainless steel-B$$_{4}$$C weight ratio between B$$_{4}$$C powder and pellet absorbers. Present issue is to clarify effect of these differences on full scale melt progression, B$$_{4}$$C oxidation and source term. Advancement of this research domain could contribute to further sophistication of prediction tool for melt progression and source terms, and treatment of organic iodide formation in safety evaluation.

WIND and WAVE experiments on aerosol behavior in pipe section under severe accident conditions

Hidaka, Akihide

no journal, ,

Highlights of WAVE and WIND experiments on FP aerosol behavior in piping under severe accident conditions performed at JAEA in 1990's are presented. It was confirmed that the FP gas/aerosol deposition due to thermophoresis or condensation can be mostly predicted well by conventional models. In WAVE experiments using a horizontal pipe with thermal gradient along the main stream or an upward oriented pipe, conventional deposition calculation based only on thermo-hydraulics of main stream could not reproduce well the measurements and a detailed deposition calculation was needed considering the secondary flow in the pipe cross section. In WIND experiment, effect of HBO$$_{2}$$ on Cesium deposition was investigated and the deposition mass increased due to formation of CsBO$$_{2}$$. The experimental results and chemical analyses are presented. This presentation could contribute to peaceful use of nuclear energy and its human resource development in India.
